2014 Kyoto Studies Course November 1st (Sat) Travel and Visiting Shrines and Temples ~The Beginning of “Famous Places”~

(8th) 2014 Kyoto Study Lecture “Traveling in Kyoto ~Tourism’s Gaze~”

Untitled 1
Around the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the early modern period, the “meisho” that we call today appeared. Kyoto came to be seen as a city filled with such “famous places,” and the main focus was on shrines and temples. Media that invites you to “famous places” will also appear one after another. These include pilgrimage mandalas, rakuchu rakugai maps, meisho ki, guidebooks, and so on. While introducing such media, we will follow the development of “famous places” and the spread of travel, using Kiyomizudera as a typical example.
