Business Overview
Each of the approximately 50 universities and organizations that are members of the University Consortium Kyoto offers its own unique lifelong learning courses. This “University Relay Course,” which started in 2016, is held at Campus Plaza Kyoto in a relay format by each university in order to let citizens know about various unique courses that make use of the characteristics of each university, other than the courses that have been provided to Kyoto College so far.

“The Life of Buddha and His Thoughts”
Instructor: Kaoru Sasaki (Professor, Department of Buddhism, Faculty of Letters)
We will introduce the original Buddhist thought, which cannot be known just by looking at Buddhism in Japan, while tracing the life of Buddha. It is full of innovative wisdom on how to live that is useful in modern society.

“Contemporary Literature and the Power of ‘Story’ ~Junichiro Tanizaki, The Tale of Genji, Haruki Murakami~”
Instructor: Atsushi Nishino (Full-time Lecturer, Faculty of Humanities)
Junichiro Tanizaki, in his controversy with Ryunosuke Akutagawa, argued that the Japan literature in which the most “interesting story” was “The Tale of Genji” was exhibited. From classic literature such as “The Tale of Genji” to Haruki Murakami’s “Kafka on the Shore” and Makoto Shinkai’s “Your Name” as examples, we will consider the nature of “storytelling” in modern times.

“Learning Buddhism for the First Time Japan”

Buddhism was born in India about 2,500 years ago and has been the source of many people’s hearts and minds to this day. In this course, we will lecture on the characteristics of Buddhism that was transmitted to Japan in an easy-to-understand manner while introducing the writings of both of them, focusing on the ideas of Sasumi and Kukai, who represented the Heian period.

“Wisdom of Oriental Medicine for a Healthy and Enjoyable Life ~What is a Regimen Life According to the Seasons?~”

The word “regimen” means “to nourish life correctly” and refers to the oriental medical view of health according to the season. “Pilgrimage to Kumano in the Middle Ages” Taizo Noda (Professor, Department of History, Faculty of Letters)
The university has concluded a tripartite agreement with the town of Nachikatsuura in Wakayama Prefecture and is promoting cultural exchange and promotion activities in various forms. As part of this effort, we will deliver a history lecture on Kumano by the Miyaji of Kumano Nachi Taisha, which celebrated its 1700th anniversary in 2017, and faculty members of the Department of History of Kumano University.

Let’s think about “growth” and “aging” from a multifaceted perspective when it comes to promoting the health of children and the elderly < the future > the future. While being aware of the similarities between the growth and development of children and the health promotion of the elderly, we plan to introduce “exercises using the mind and body” that can be enjoyed while sitting.
