Winter Field Exploration & Summer Experience Class The Field Science Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Environment at the Saga Campus offers experience-based classes in summer and winter for parents and children. Children’s Nature Observation & Mini Insect Exhibition These events, including learning sessions and mini exhibitions, allow children and citizens to observe Kyoto-native insects like the Japanese oak silk moth and think about environmental and biodiversity issues. The relay lecture, held in a Kyoto machiya townhouse, has been held four times a term since 2004, with experts with deep knowledge of Kyoto’s history and culture as lecturers. The Ritsumeikan Saturday Lectures were established in 1946 by the late Hiroshi Suekawa, who was the university’s president at the time, who advocated that “scholarship and science exist to protect the interests and human rights of the general public, that universities are places that develop human beings through scholarship, and that it is important to walk with the public, think with the public, and learn with the public,” with the aim of opening university lectures to the general public and strengthening the ties between the university and the local community. With the aim of helping elementary school students experience the “fun and excitement of learning and physical activity,” our faculty and student clubs teach nearly 30 courses ranging from sports to culture and art, and nature and the environment. Approximately 1,000 people take these courses annually.

In response to the needs of modern society, we have been offering free lectures since 1977 with the aim of returning the results of our research to the local community and fulfilling part of the university’s social mission. We offer about six lectures a year, focusing on themes that make use of the characteristics of our faculties, such as problems facing modern society.
