(7th) 2014 Kyoto Study Lecture “Traveling in Kyoto ~Tourism’s Gaze~”
With the development of modern railway networks, the postal system, and the media, folk events and performing arts in various places were “discovered” and “hometowns” were created. In the 1970s, the railway made people aware of their “hometown” and “hometown” again through the “Discovery Japan” of the Japanese National Railways. Among them, Kyoto will become a major tourist destination under the image of “Japanese hometown”. I would like to think together with you about the relationship between the history of technology and the history of media in the historical background of tourism, the relationship between Kyoto and Kyoto tourism, and folkloreism.

(6th) 2014 Kyoto Study Lecture “Traveling in Kyoto – A Sightseeing Gaze”
Kyoto after the middle of the Edo period is often said to have become a tourist city. According to travel records, sightseeing in Kyoto at that time was centered around visiting shrines and temples, just like today. At the same time, in Kyoto at the time, there were various shops, restaurants, and performances of various performing arts. The existence of these facilities and performances is thought to have been one of the joys of travel for those who visited Kyoto. In this lecture, I would like to introduce these situations while showing concrete materials.
