Business overview
The University Consortium Kyoto, a public interest incorporated foundation, is working on projects related to supporting students with disabilities, a need that is high among its member universities, in light of the “Act on the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities” which came into effect in April 2016. This time, with the revised Act on the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities coming into effect in April 2024, and each university providing support in accordance with the revised Act, we will hold a training session for university faculty and staff on “How to Respond to Students with Disabilities” as described below. We look forward to your participation.

This training program is designed for staff working in academic and student affairs departments, providing them with an opportunity to learn the fundamental principles necessary for supporting students with disabilities. It is also open to faculty and staff who have been assigned to support students with disabilities due to personnel changes, as well as staff from other departments.
In light of the revised Disability Discrimination Elimination Act coming into effect in April 2024, this program will serve as an opportunity to systematically learn about the meaning of reasonable accommodation and how to provide support based on it. - 2. Date and time

① Faculty and staff members in charge of academic affairs and student-related duties at universities and other higher education institutions.
② If you understand the purpose of this training, the following faculty and staff members are also welcome to participate:
・Those who have previously been in charge of academic affairs or student-related duties, or who may be in charge of such duties in the future.
・Those in library departments, admissions departments, career support departments, etc.
・Those in charge of supporting students with disabilities who have limited work experience at universities or other higher education institutions. - 5. Capacity

At last year’s training session, I reported on the faculty salon that was piloted at Ryukoku University. The starting point for this salon was the perplexing inquiries that the Disability Student Support Office received daily from many faculty members. “I received a document requesting accommodations for a student, but it is difficult to accept this request.” “If we provide accommodations, the student will not be able to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to earn credits, but is it okay to allow that?”
We answer these questions based on the so-called “principle of not altering the essence,” but it is often difficult to provide answers that are tailored to the individual circumstances.
