Business Overview
Each of the approximately 50 universities and organizations that are members of the University Consortium Kyoto offers its own unique lifelong learning courses. This “University Relay Course,” which started in 2016, is held at Campus Plaza Kyoto in a relay format by each university in order to let citizens know about various unique courses that make use of the characteristics of each university, other than the courses that have been provided to Kyoto College so far.

“The Life Period of Ancient India”
Instructor: Kazuhiko Yamamoto (Professor, Department of Buddhism, Faculty of Letters, Otani University)
In ancient India, life is divided into four periods: the student period, the house-dwelling period, the forest dwelling period, and the nomadic period. The Hayashi dwelling period is the period of life from retirement to death, but modern Japan cannot avoid this period. In this course, we will introduce the life of the forest dwelling period in ancient India from the Buddhist scriptures.

“Buddha and Dharma-san – Exploring the Charm of the Buddha”

Mr./Ms. Buddha, who advocated Buddhism in ancient India, and Mr./Ms. Horen, who founded the Pure Land sect in medieval Japan. Although the times and regions in which they lived and the teachings they advocated are different, they have in common the fact that they are religious figures who have made a paradigm shift. In this course, I would like to think about their personalities and human charm by comparing them, and consider the significance that they left in the history of thought.

Junichiro Tanizaki’s novel has been adapted into a movie many times, and famous actresses such as Kinuyo Tanaka, Machiko Kyo, Hideko Takamine, Fujiko Yamamoto, Sayuri Yoshinaga, and Momoe Yamaguchi played the heroine. Since Tanizaki himself was making films at the dawn of Japan cinema, he talks about the relationship between literature and cinema and the appeal of each.

“Interesting Ecology of Japanese Honeybees: Differences between Non-Native Honeybees and Wild Japanese Honeybees”
Instructor: Fumio Sakamoto (Visiting Researcher, Kyoto University of Advanced Science (Professor Emeritus, Kyoto Gakuen University)
In Japan, there are western honey bees and wild Japanese honey bees that are bred as livestock. My research focuses on the differences between the two, and the differences in their ecology are interesting. In addition, based on the research results, we developed a bee attractant, which has been awarded to Japanese bee lovers.
