Event Report
On Sunday, December 2, the 2018 "University-Regional Collaboration Summit" was held at Campus Plaza Kyoto. In the first part, we invited Mr. Mitsuhiro Yamazaki, former International Business Development Officer of the Portland City Development Bureau, to give a lecture on the theme of "Community Design and Livable Urban Space ~ From the Case of Portland".
In the 1950s and 70s, Portland became one of the most polluted rivers and air in the United States due to industrial pollution and car-centered road design, and many residents moved to the suburbs, turning the center of the city into an empty ghost town. From such a nadir state, we set the first goal of preserving the natural environment, carried out land readjustment on the premise that people would move on foot, and worked together to rebuild the city, and we were able to transform into a city that is now said to be the most desirable city to live in in the United States. He talked about how the secret to his success was to raise a slogan of "valuing nature," which can be a goal for people in any position.
Part 1: Keynote speech by Mr. Mitsuhiro Yamazaki
Next, Mr. Yamazaki, Mr. Masamine Fukao (Director of Research and Public Relations Division, University Consortium Kyoto), and Mr. Kazuhiro Shionoya (Director, University Policy Department, Policy Office, Planning Bureau, Kyoto City) held a discussion on the theme of "The Role of Universities in the Community and Prospects for Regional Cooperation," and messages were sent about the importance of taking on challenges without fear of failure from the perspectives unique to students and universities.
Part 1: Ding Talk
After that, faculty and staff from the six universities (Otani University, Kyoto University of Education, Kyoto Women's University, Kyoto Tachibana University, Doshisha Women's University, and Ryukoku University) who have adopted the "University of Community" promotion project gave presentations on the regional collaboration activities of each university.
Part 1: Case studies by universities that have adopted the "Cooperative University for Learning" Promotion Project
In the second part, poster sessions were held by 21 exhibiting organizations, including the Gakumachi Collaboration Project, the Ward Community Development Support Project, the Ward Office and the University, and the six universities that have been selected for the University Collaboration University, and actively exchanged opinions and exchanges between visitors and the exhibiting organizations.
* Please see the list of poster session exhibitors below for each exhibition poster.
Part 2: Poster Session
After the end of the second part, an exchange meeting was held by the poster session presenters. With Kyoto City Urban Development Advisor Shinichi Asakura as a facilitator, we came up with ideas that could be used for urban development by randomly combining keywords of our own interests based on the overall theme of the 2018 summit, "The Future of Creative and Sustainable Towns." It was a good opportunity for the students to learn the importance of creating new things with free thinking and the importance of having a creative mind in a friendly atmosphere.
Part 2: Networking session by poster session presenters
