University Education in the Post-COVID Era, Part 3: “Considering Active Learning in the Post-COVID Era” |
|
In the changing environment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the teaching methods at universities had to change drastically. It can be said that active learning in face-to-face classes was not very physically or psychologically burdensome. However, since 2020, we have had to consider using online software for remote learning, securing classrooms where social distancing can be ensured, and conducting active learning with as little contact as possible. In this exchange meeting, we plan to share information about the practice of active learning at your university during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even in the post-COVID era, active learning-type classes will be increasingly required. Why not go beyond the boundaries of your university and think about the future of active learning with faculty and staff from other universities? This is not a “training session” but an “exchange meeting,” so please feel free to join us. |

Implementation Report
The 2022 Kyoto FD Exchange Meeting was held three times in person and online (Zoom meetings) with the unified theme of “Post-COVID University Education”.
The first meeting was held in person with the theme of “Changing trends in applicants’ aspirations and recent entrance exam topics” as an opportunity to think about how the criteria for applicants to choose a university have changed over the three years since the COVID-19 pandemic. After Mr. Masashi Okamoto (Director of the West Japan Sales Department, KEI Advance Co., Ltd., Kawaijuku Group) provided a topic for discussion, participants split into groups to collect questions and opinions, and shared information and exchanged opinions on issues and doubts not only about the post-COVID era, but also about the changes in the entrance exam environment as high school-university connection reforms progress, and the situation in which competition is expected to ease.
The second meeting was held online with the theme of “Considering educational DX from the perspective of upgrading university English classes – from the practice of project-based English programs” as an opportunity to think about DX in education, which has become even more of a topic during the COVID-19 pandemic. After Mr. Shuhei Kimura (Associate Professor, College of Life Sciences/Vice Dean, College of Education, Ritsumeikan University) gave a data-based case report on the project-based English program in English classes at Ritsumeikan University, the participants split into groups and shared information and exchanged opinions beyond the boundaries of their universities on topics such as “What is DX in education anyway?” and “What kind of teacher upgrades are necessary for DX?”.
The third session was held online under the theme of “Thinking about active learning in the post-COVID era” as an opportunity to think about the teaching methods at universities that have had to change dramatically in the changing environment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and about the practice of active learning with as little contact as possible. After Ms. Hitomi Asada (Associate Professor, Department of Early Childhood Education, Kacho Junior College) gave a case report on the methods of active learning at the Department of Early Childhood Education at Kacho Junior College, information was shared and opinions were exchanged on the teaching methods, tools (apps) used, and ideas based on their advantages and disadvantages.
In the participant survey, the total number of responses of “Satisfied” or “Somewhat Satisfied” was 100% for all sessions, indicating that there was a high level of interest in the purpose and theme of this event. Based on the
opinions of participants, we will continue to plan and consider further improvements to the event from next year onwards.
