FY2024

Business Overview

As an organizational initiative to help faculty members improve and improve their teaching content and methods, the University Consortium Kyoto has been promoting FD activities in the Kyoto area together with member schools since 1995, shortly after its establishment.

In 2019, we launched the “Kyoto FD Exchange Meeting” as a place for university faculty and staff to share ideas and concerns related to FD beyond the boundaries of their affiliated universities, and to exchange on various themes related to FD.

The Kyoto FD Exchange Meeting in 2024 will be held twice in total.

Session 1 “Seminar Management to Motivate Students”
~Thinking about gimmicks from the perspectives of both humanities and sciences~”
This year’s theme will be the first Kyoto FD Exchange Meeting in 2024, with the theme of “Managing a seminar that motivates students ~ Thinking about tricks from the perspectives of the humanities and sciences ~”.
Suddenly, teachers! Are you having trouble with this? “There is no vitality in the seminar” and “The students’ motivation for research is…”
The theme of the first Kyoto FD Exchange Meeting in 2024 is “seminar management to motivate students”. The lecturers are Prof. Kurita (science) and Prof. Zheng (humanities), who have a reputation for seminar and laboratory management. The teachers are creative in the form of joint seminars and other creative ways to create a place where students can learn independently. Would you like to take a hint from this practice? Let’s go beyond the boundaries of universities and the humanities and sciences and talk together about “how to make seminars and laboratories vibrant” and share wisdom.
This is not a “training session” but an “exchange meeting”, so please feel free to join us. The teachers’ seminars will change!

Session 2 “Thinking about the mental health of university students and class management”
-What you can do from the standpoint of a teacher-”
In recent years, there has been an increase in the enrollment rate of students who feel some kind of disability in conventional class management due to mental disorders and developmental disabilities, and the needs of these students at universities are diversifying. In addition, in modern class management, such as the mandatory reasonable accommodation and the spread of expectations for online classes, these factors are intricately intertwined, and in some cases, it may be difficult to deal with “what should be done and to what extent”. In addition to responding after the student consults with you, there may be things you can prepare for in advance.
Therefore, this training will be an opportunity to think together about how to deal with class management based on the concept of a “social model of disability” as a hint for dealing with these issues. First, you will learn the basic knowledge of mental health for university students, and then you will get an overview of the concept of the “social model of disability.” In addition, I would like to have the opportunity to think about tomorrow’s class management together while thinking about “what teachers can do” and “what they can do” from both the post and front perspectives, and at the same time, “what should not be done” based on the keywords “seven elements of reasonable accommodation,” “the role of the syllabus,” and “use of rubrics.”

This exchange event was held face-to-face for all two programs in FY2024 as a place for exchange between university faculty and staff on the theme of FD.
In the participant questionnaire asking about the satisfaction of the program, 63.6% were “satisfied” and 36.4% were “somewhat satisfied” in the first session, 83.3% were “satisfied” and 16.7% were “somewhat satisfied” in the second session, and the satisfaction level was obtained in each session.
In the free description of the questionnaire, the following impressions were received, and participants actively learned through lectures and group work by lecturers, and actively exchanged opinions.

There

was not enough time for group talks. Also, the lecturer’s talk was very interesting in relation to his own research.
The actual cases in the second session
were all about problems, but the explanations were very easy to understand, and I was very satisfied with the exchange of opinions with the teachers in the group.

In the next year, in addition to sharing knowledge by lecturers, we will consider more practical and participatory programs while valuing opportunities to deepen exchanges among participants.
