It is a medium-sized university located right next to the Utsumasa Tenjingawa Subway Station in Kyoto City, and in 2019, it was renamed Kyoto University of Advanced Science and Technology, and at the same time, a department specializing in supporting students with disabilities was established.
In this article, we will introduce the current status and issues of support for students with disabilities at our university, especially the status of the support system, reasonable accommodations, devising faculty-staff collaboration, and communication with students and parents. - Breakout Sessions
A Coordination Basics (Anything Talk) Capacity: 10 peopleThis is a breakout session for those who have 1 or 2 years of practical experience in supporting students with disabilities. It is not uncommon for people to be worried and confused about how to deal with it on a daily basis, such as not yet understanding reasonable accommodation, or having problems and questions in practice.
This subcommittee will be a place to discuss any concerns and issues of support personnel, and to have frank opinions with everyone and to think together about the perspectives and roles of support personnel.B Coordination Application (2~3 years or more) Capacity: 10 peopleIn order to consider and judge the content of reasonable accommodation, it is necessary to have expertise such as knowledge and skills in order to conduct an assessment through dialogue.
This subcommittee will hold meetings based on a preliminary questionnaire on cases where the content of consideration is unclear or difficult, and will be an opportunity to exchange opinions and information on responses and countermeasures for cases that have arisen from concerns and problems arising from the difficulty of constructive dialogue.C Internal Management from the Perspective of Social Models Capacity: 10 studentsSystems and structures of universities and other institutions built on the premise of students without disabilities may be social barriers for students with disabilities. Therefore, it is necessary for not only faculty and staff involved in the field of support for students with disabilities, but also all members of universities and other institutions to understand this and promote the development of a system to ensure students’ right to learn.
Therefore, this subcommittee will be an opportunity to discuss overall management related to support for students with disabilities from the perspective of social models. Participants will be given a brief introduction to their university’s support system. Also, if possible, please prepare 14 copies of materials (leaflets for student distribution, etc.).D Support for students with mental and developmental disabilities Capacity: 20 peopleIn supporting students with mental and developmental disabilities, supporters often face various difficulties and situations where they find it difficult to make decisions.
This subcommittee will be an opportunity to exchange information and opinions in a rough manner so that it will be an opportunity to gain new insights, regardless of the length of support experience. When you participate, you will be asked to answer a pre-questionnaire to consider the theme.E Career support for students with disabilities Capacity: 10 peopleCareer support for students with disabilities is just as important as academic support, but there are also difficult issues such as creating an on-campus support system, collaborating with external support organizations, and approaching students from an early stage.
In this subcommittee, we would like to exchange information on the case studies and issues of each university, and exchange opinions with a small group so that we can share helpful attempts and initiatives that can be incorporated into tomorrow’s work and practice. - 16:20
