Implementation Report
The SD Forum has been held annually since 2003, with the aim of enhancing the capabilities and exchanging information among university staff. It provides a forum for exchanging opinions through keynote speeches and breakout sessions on topics of interest in the field of SD. The 21st forum, held in 2023, will be held online, as was the case last year, with the overall theme of “Aiming for a University Where Organizations and Individuals Grow Together.” The keynote speech in the first part of the forum featured Professor Hajime Ota of Doshisha University’s Faculty of Policy Studies, who spoke on the theme of “Creating an Organization That Delivers the Motivation and Abilities of Faculty and Staff.” The second part of the forum featured breakout sessions on two themes: “The Science of Human Resource Development—Focusing on Off-JT for Sharing Practical Knowledge Among Staff” and “The Purpose Model—Communication that Connects One’s Vision with the Organization and Motivates Teams.
” Participants commented that they gained an understanding of organizational culture and faculty characteristics, and learned how to behave as staff members. They also found the concepts of “direct integration” and “indirect integration” helpful in clarifying their perspectives. However, some participants found the content difficult to understand. In the subcommittee, participants expressed their desire to consider the case method in their own organizations, as a good example of how it can lead to behavioral change, and their belief that the purpose model is important in moving university organizations toward a positive culture. The online program was well-received, citing its ease of participation without travel time or costs, and its ability to efficiently learn key points, with 92% of survey respondents expressing a positive opinion. While 85% of participants were “satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied,” suggesting that the program contributed to improving participants’ skills, the number of participants decreased from 163 last year to 92. This decrease is likely due to factors such as the expansion of training content at our own university due to the mandatory SD program and the increase in online SD training programs offered by other organizations.
Looking ahead to next year, the SD Training Committee plans to continue discussions, including identifying topics of interest and reviewing FD and SD programs.
