“University staff and motivation: How to find your own aspirations to enjoy your work”
The work of university staff is carried out within a unique culture, such as seniority and unclear evaluation criteria. In such an environment, while some people seem to be deliberately trying to keep motivation low, it is increasingly difficult to maintain a balance among employees as diversity in work styles is required.
Under these circumstances, this forum will deepen discussions on how to keep high motivation among high performers and how to increase high performers by increasing motivation. I would also like to consider how the awareness and actions of each staff member affect the entire organization, and I would like to use this as a forum to explore concrete measures to create an environment where university staff can continue to grow while having a rewarding job.

Implementation Report
This year’s theme was “Motivation with University Staff ~How to Find Your Own Aspirations to Enjoy Work~”, and the purpose of the event was to focus on the motivation of university staff themselves to work and how to approach their careers, and to obtain hints for increasing motivation through self-understanding. In the keynote speech, Mr. Seiji Terashira (Representative Director of Learning Co., Ltd.) was invited to give a lecture on the theme of “Motivation Management Connecting Individuals, Teams, and Organizations”. In the second half of the breakout session, three breakout sessions were held under the themes of “What do university staff work for? – Personal Discussion on Motivation Required in the Era of University Elimination -“, “Designing University Employees – Aiming for Happiness in the Era of Career Autonomy-“, and “How to create, find, and push motivation switches”.
The keynote speeches provided specific examples and scientific and theoretical approaches to understand organizational management based on individual innate and acquired characteristics, as well as the “differences” between generations and personalities. Many participants commented that the content was easy to understand because it connected theory and practice, and that it was an opportunity to review their daily duties, indicating that they gained new insights and hints about motivation management.
At the subcommittees, various practices for maintaining and improving motivation as university staff and career development were shared, and lively discussions were held on each theme. In particular, at the breakout sessions that incorporated work, comments were received that “I was able to frankly exchange opinions with staff from other universities” and “I was able to receive opinions from various perspectives, which was a great learning experience,” and it was an opportunity for participants to interact and gain awareness.
The number of participants was 131, higher than last year’s 126. Regarding the content of the event, 95% of the respondents gave a positive evaluation as “satisfied/somewhat satisfied”, and it can be said that it was able to accurately set the theme among the various issues faced by current university staff, and generally contributed to improving the quality and motivation of the participants.
In addition, the information exchange meeting was very exciting, with more than half of the participants attending.
This will be the last time the SD Forum will be held alone, but in the future, we would like to integrate it into the FD and SD Forum, which is held from the end of February to the beginning of March, and promote it as a project to ensure that teachers and staff learn their respective skills, while teachers and staff can learn and interact with each other, and foster collaboration between teachers and staff.
