Symposium
February 25th (Sat) 14:00-16:30
How will students learn at universities in the future
? Diversity in learning that fosters autonomy
Capacity: 1,000 people (600 people for member schools)
There are many different types of students at universities, and each of them learns different things independently. The way of learning at universities is changing from the “teaching paradigm” where the teacher is the main focus to the “learning paradigm” where the learner is the main focus. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, there are many examples of students practicing independent learning through off-campus activities such as industry-academia collaboration and community collaboration. In addition, support for independent learning for various students is becoming more diverse. In addition to general learning support and the development of learning environments, support is also necessary for students with disabilities and those with financial problems.
In this symposium, we would like to discuss how students should learn in universities in the future, citing examples of students learning independently through community collaboration and efforts to support various students.

Implementation Report

Report of the 28th FD Forum [Click here for details]

The 28th FD Forum was held online (including some hybrid) over four days, from February 18th (Sat), 23rd (Thurs, holiday), 24th (Fri), and 25th (Sat), 2023, with the main theme of “Challenges and Choices Required to Support Diverse Learning.”
The FD Forum, organized by the University Consortium Kyoto, has been held since 1995 with the aim of improving the quality of higher education and disseminating information on FD activities from Kyoto, and this year marks the 28th time it has been held.
This time, each university reported on its efforts and practices, such as how university faculty and staff can support diverse students studying at university, learning environment, industry-academia collaboration, and community collaboration, as well as support for students with disabilities and ensuring learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Poster
presentations were held on the first day, and subcommittees on a wide range of themes related to 11 learning support were held on the second to fourth days, and a symposium and closing session were held in the afternoon of the fourth day.
416 university faculty and staff members and education-related personnel from across the country gathered to share results and practices of learning support and engage in lively exchanges of opinions.
In the online poster session held on the first day, a total of eight educational practice cases were presented by member schools of the University Consortium Kyoto. 50 people participated, and lively Q&A sessions were held. The presenters also asked each other questions about their poster presentations, providing an opportunity for interaction between the presenters.

On the second to fourth days, 11 breakout sessions were held, with a variety of presenters from various fields discussing ways to support diverse students. This was the third time the session was held online this year, and meaningful exchanges were held between the speakers and online participants using chat functions and question forms. In addition, the ninth breakout session was held for the first time in a hybrid format, connecting in-person participants at Campus Plaza Kyoto with online participants via Zoom, with the theme of “Students’ university life during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The final day’s symposium was entitled “How will we learn at universities in the future? Diversity of learning that creates autonomy,” and featured three speakers: Takaaki Nishida (Associate Professor, Faculty of Life Sciences, Kyoto Sangyo University), Chihiro Kunimoto (Vice Director/Associate Professor, Academic Link Center, Chiba University), and Kazuhiro Nagata (Director, JT Biohistory Research Hall, poet, Professor Emeritus, Kyoto University, Professor Emeritus, Kyoto Sangyo University) (Coordinator: Hidetaka Shiratori (Professor, Faculty of Life Sciences, Kyoto Sangyo University/Vice Director, Educational Support Research and Development Center)). In the Q&A session, the speakers discussed how students can learn independently at universities, how to support them, faculty-staff collaboration, and the ideal teacher who encourages independent learning.
