Overview of the business

Approximately 50 universities and organizations that are members of the University Consortium Kyoto offer unique lifelong learning courses. This "University Relay Course," which started in 2016, is held at Campus Plaza Kyoto in a relay format by each university in order to let the public know about various unique courses that make use of the characteristics of each university, other than the courses previously provided to Kyoto College.

"Life Ending Life in Ancient India"

Instructor: Kazuhiko Yamamoto (Professor, Department of Buddhist Studies, Faculty of Letters, Otani University)

In ancient India, life was divided into four phases: student period, home period, forest dwelling period, and excursion period. The forest dwelling period is the period of life from retirement to death, and modern Japan cannot avoid this period. In this course, we will introduce the life of the forest dwelling period in ancient India from Buddhist scriptures.

"Buddha and Hōran-san -Exploring its Charm-"

Instructor: Satoshi Hiraoka (President, Kyoto Bunkyo University, Professor, Faculty of Clinical Psychology)

Buddha, who chanted Buddhism in ancient India, and Hōran, who opened the Pure Land sect in medieval Japan. Although they lived in different eras, regions, and teachings, they have in common that they are religious people who have initiated a paradigm shift. In this lecture, I would like to compare the two people, think about their personalities and human charm, and reconsider the significance they left in the history of thought.

Buddhism, which was born in India about 2,500 years ago, has since spread to various parts of Asia, put down roots, and blossomed into diverse teachings. In this course, we will introduce the outline of the whole program and consider the characteristics of Japan Buddhism.

We will think about how to maintain the physical strength to take care of ourselves and extend healthy life expectancy from exercise and nutrition. Let's clarify what "moderate exercise" means and what "proper diet" means from a lot of scientific knowledge and my own practical research, and acquire skills to maintain and improve health and physical fitness.

"Heroines of Novels Shining on the Silver Screen -Focusing on Junichiro Tanizaki's Literature and Film Production-"

Tanizaki Junichiro's novels have been adapted into films many times, and famous actresses such as Kinuyo Tanaka, Machiko Kyo, Hideko Takamine, Fujiko Yamamoto, Sayuri Yoshinaga, and Momoe Yamaguchi have played heroines. Since Tanizaki himself was making films at the dawn of Japan cinema, he talks about the relationship between literature and cinema and the appeal of each.

This is an overview of how the cult whose founder was Shinran developed through what problems it faced in history. We will look at the establishment of Honganji, the explosive expansion of the religious line by Renjo, the Battle of Ishiyama, the East-West offshoot, and the establishment of Ryukoku University.

, "Interesting Ecology of Japanese Honeybees: Differences between Alien Honey Bees and Wild Japanese Honeybees"

Instructor: Fumio Sakamoto (Visiting Researcher, Kyoto University of Advanced Science (Professor Emeritus, Kyoto Gakuen University)

In the Japan there are Japanese bees and wild Japanese bees, which are raised as livestock. I am focusing on the differences between the two, and the ecological differences between them are interesting. In addition, when we developed a bee attractant based on the results of our research, it began to be used as an award for Japanese honey bee lovers.
