Business summary
The Kyoto Student Festival is a student-produced festival that has been held every October since 2003 in the Heian Shrine and Okazaki Promenade area, planned and run by university students studying in the student town of Kyoto. It is backed by the “All Kyoto” system, including Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto City, economic organizations, universities, and the local community. In addition to planning and running the main festival in October, the Kyoto Student Festival Executive Committee is also involved in various activities throughout the year, such as participating in local events, exchange projects, and volunteer activities through the original dance “Kyoen Sodefure!”, and carrying out international exchange activities.
Theme of the 22nd Kyoto Student Festival
About the theme
The 22nd Kyoto Student Festival aims to continue to evolve further under the mission of “building and passing on the future” so that the Kyoto Student Festival will be the 30th and continue for decades to come, by carefully inheriting the traditions and connections that the previous Kyoto Student Festivals have built up. In addition, we will not only inherit the traditions, but also keep in mind the
willingness to take on new challenges and connect the 22nd festival to the future, and we will continue to work with the awareness that “everything we do at the Kyoto Student Festival will lead to the future of the Kyoto Student Festival.” We have incorporated this feeling into the theme. The
English version’s theme, “Bridge the Past, Build the Future,” is intended to transcend cultural differences and have an emotional impact and resonance that is intended to align with the perceptions of foreigners.

Project Overview
After the milestone 20th festival, last year’s 21st Kyoto Student Festival was once again a festival that “soared” towards a new future, and we were able to create a Kyoto Student Festival filled with excitement again, with the revival of the Kyoen Mikoshi and the revival of the dance performance that had decreased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was shortened due to rain on the day, but a large number of people came and watched, and it ended with a great success. This year’s 22nd Kyoto Student Festival will be based on the theme of “future,” and we will plan and work on the SDGs and add English language to signs and billboards with overseas visitors such as international students in mind, in order to convey the appeal to visitors and realize a festival that will be the first step towards internationalizing the Kyoto Student Festival. On the day of the festival, we plan to hold dance, music, experience-based events, food booths, and more.

22nd Kyoto Student Festival Annual Activities Introduction
The Kyoto Student Festival Executive Committee communicates with the local people in the Okazaki area, where the Kyoto Student Festival is held, and with the local people who have been connected to us through our activities to date, conveying our gratitude to them and building cooperative relationships for the main festival. We will continue to carry out daily activities with the local community throughout the year, aiming to create a “festival” that is loved by the local community and has roots in the community, in addition to the main festival.
Dance performance and outreach classes
We perform the Kyoto Student Festival’s original dance “Kyoen Sodefure!” in various places inside and outside Kyoto, and give lectures (commonly known as “on-site classes”) at elementary, junior high, and special needs schools in Kyoto Prefecture, so that more people can experience the charm of Kyoen Sodefure! and the Kyoto Student Festival. In addition, by having university students interact with people of many generations in the local area through dance, we also hope to revitalize the local area.
Last year, we had many opportunities to perform dance, including participating in the “Kyoto Culture and Education Day in Hue” held in Vietnam, and performing at Sanga Stadium and Teramachi Kyogoku Shopping Street. This year, we are performing at events in various regions.
Community Exchange
We participate in local festivals and other events to interact with children, and also conduct nighttime patrols once a month to ensure the safety of the Okazaki area, where the main festival is held, and to deepen our ties with the local community. As well as aiming to revitalize the area, we are also working to deepen our ties with the local community and to make the Kyoto Student Festival known to more people in Kyoto.
International exchange
We actively engage in exchange activities with international students studying in Kyoto. We convey the charms of Kyoto to international students, and in turn, we learn various things from them, inspiring each other.
Last year, we held two exchange events for international students, where we were able to deepen our relationships with about 100 international students, and we also carried the “Kyoen Mikoshi” at the main festival. We also participated in the “Kyoto Culture and Education Day in Hue” held in Hue Province, Vietnam, where we were able to deepen our relationships with Vietnamese high school and university students. We plan to hold three exchange events for international students this year as well.
environmental activities
The cleanup activities will be based on the theme of “KYO-SENSE,” which was coined by the Kyoto Student Festival and means “environmental efforts you can start today.” We are taking environmentally friendly steps, such as carrying out local cleanup activities and using environmentally friendly materials for our original goods.
