Overview of the business

Approximately 50 universities and organizations that are members of the University Consortium Kyoto offer unique lifelong learning courses. This "University Relay Course," which started in 2016, is held at Campus Plaza Kyoto in a relay format by each university in order to let the public know about various unique courses that make use of the characteristics of each university, other than the courses previously provided to Kyoto College.

of Foreign Studies "How to communicate with foreigners visiting Kyoto"

Instructor: Jeff Birkland (Professor, Faculty of Foreign Studies) Communication is not only verbal,

but mostly non-verbal. This course is a workshop on how to introduce Kyoto culture to foreigners with different values and cultural backgrounds, and to experience sending and receiving nonverbal communication in a workshop format.

"What Buddhist Statues Tell Us: Exploring the History of the Region"

Instructor: Nozomu Saito (Professor, Department of History, Faculty of Letters, Director of Otani University Museum)

The Buddha statue of the head of the Otani University Museum receives people's wishes as an object of worship and is appreciated as a sculptural work, but it is also a powerful material for thinking about the history of regions where there are few written historical materials. Using Nishiasai Town, Nagahama City in northern Kohoku as an example, we will consider the history of this area as seen from Buddhist statues from ancient times to the early modern period.

No matter how delicious the food looks, you can't tell the true taste just by looking at it. It's the same thing with studying Buddhism. Let us use it as a source of food for a happy life by learning deeply flavorful Buddhist thought as your own.

Currently, there are many people who are prevented from participating in society because they are minorities. In order to realize a society where everyone can live comfortably, we will take a multifaceted look at things and consider tools and spaces that are easy for everyone to use, as well as the state of society.

"Literature and Freedom of Expression: Focusing on Tanizaki Junichiro's Modern Translation of The Tale of Genji and Hosoyuki"

* The venue has been changed to Campus Plaza Kyoto 5F Seminar Rooms 2-4 (capacity 90 people). However, additional lectures on October 21 will be held from 10:00 to 11:30 in Lecture Room 2 (capacity 250 people).

Instructor: Atsushi Nishino (Lecturer, Faculty of Humanities)

In 2015-16, literary magnate Junichiro Tanizaki celebrated the 50th anniversary of his death and the 130th anniversary of his birth. The creative activity was also a constant struggle against the powers that suppress speech (the censorship system). Now that the environment surrounding speech is changing drastically, we will decipher Tanizaki literature in Kyoto, which has a deep connection with Tanizaki.

"Building your body and physical strength no matter how old you are"

Instructor: Misaka Kimura (Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences) As we enter a super-aging society with a long lifespan, it has become a major social issue to be able to live independently and energetically until as long as possible, but above all, the foundation is the body (physical strength)

in old age. If physical strength and physical function are left alone, they will clearly decline with age. We will think about how to prevent it.

Due to the declining birthrate, aging population, and changes in lifestyles, shopping districts and local industries are also facing challenges. In this context, thinking about what people in diverse positions can do and connecting with each other will become "vitality of the community." I would like to think about hints for urban development that we can do together with you.

"Kyoto in the Nara Era"

What kind of people lived and what kind of life did they lead in Kyoto before Heian-kyo? I will talk about it based on the description of national history such as the Japan Shoki and the Successor Japan Period, as well as the ancient documents left in Shosoin. It is a little-known slice of Kyoto's history.

"Development of Tokuho Foods with Function Claims Based on Bioregulatory Functions of Foods"

It has been clarified that foods not only function as nutrients but also have various bioregulatory functions, and Tokuho and foods with functional claims have been developed. It provides an overview of these foods and includes recent insights on how they are actually developed.

"Shinran Saints in the Dictionary-Heart that adores saints-"

We will introduce the life of Shinran saints using the figures introduced in the dictionary as clues. From classical dictionaries to recent dictionaries, Shinran saint images appear in their entries. Through it, I would like to think about the hearts of those who adore saints.

and it is not easy to know their appearance correctly. However, the unique phenomenon created by the 'gravity lens' provides information to approach various mysteries of the universe. We will introduce this phenomenon and its usefulness.
