Business summary

As educational research at higher education institutions becomes more sophisticated and complex, SD will be made compulsory from 2017, and it is hoped that faculty and staff will further improve their qualifications and promote collaboration between teaching professions.

Additionally, the environment surrounding higher education institutions is undergoing rapid changes, and university staff are increasingly required to acquire a wide range of knowledge and advanced expertise.

The SD joint training program is a project that aims to reduce costs for each member university by taking advantage of economies of scale, with the aim of improving the abilities of staff and making university operations more efficient and sophisticated.

Please use this as an opportunity to exchange information and build networks beyond the university.

The more you know about business etiquette, the better it becomes.

1. Training overview

  • Students will learn the basics of knowledge, business etiquette, and how to proceed with their work as university staff, and will acquire the ability to adapt to their duties and workplaces.
  • Most of the problems that occur at the places where young employees are assigned are related to speaking. For example, not reporting, not using honorific language, not answering the phone, making negative comments, etc. In other words, we will tell you about the approach to “how to speak as a member of society,” which is important in educating new and young people.
  • Also, whether or not you can accurately grasp the other person’s intentions and requests depends largely on the person’s listening skills. In order to get all the information you need, we will teach you how to listen with your entire body (ear, mouth, eyes, head, body, and mind), as well as effective questioning techniques to get information from you.

2. Key points for training management

  • By creating a flow for each item, from lectures (knowledge injection) to exercises (practical), we achieve “strengthening practical skills through input ⇒ output.”
  • The exercises include role-playing and telephone exercises based on real-life situations.
  • Because the participants use their own “training sheets” to write down what they have learned and their thoughts, they can concentrate more on the course.

Higher education situation for university staff (basic)
*This lecture will, in principle, have the same training content as the one held in 2023.

The number of births in 2025 was approximately 758,000. Shocking news was announced by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in February of this year. For those of us in the university industry, the number of births directly determines the number of people who will enroll in university 18 years from now, so we have to be sensitive to trends. According to the future population projections (median birth and mortality projections) published by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research in April last year, the 18-year-old population in 2041, when people born in Reiwa 5 will take university entrance exams, will be: Including “international population movement,” that is, immigrants and foreign residents, the number is approximately 794,000. This is 72.8% of the current level (approximately 1.091 million), and it can be said that this is a hopeless number for many universities as long as they continue to recruit students mainly targeting the 18-year-old population in Japan.

Recently, as an alternative to this, the acceptance of adult students and international students has been advocated, and the government is also promoting policy guidance in this direction. However, can they really replace the traditional student population? Is it easy to secure international students? There are fundamental problems.

In addition, the situation surrounding higher education is chaotic. Numerous changes are occurring in factors directly related to universities, such as the advancement of DX, the major trend of globalization, and revisions to curriculum guidelines. Among these, the rise and penetration of generative AI is having a diverse effect on the nature of university education, student support services, and the way we work, showing signs that major changes are inevitable. These changes in the environment have made it even more difficult to predict the future, and the social missions and roles expected of universities have also become more diverse.

In light of this situation, in September of last year, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Moriyama consulted the Central Council for Education regarding the form of higher education with a view to future society in the face of a rapidly declining birthrate. In response to this, a new “Special Subcommittee on the State of Higher Education” was established under the Universities Subcommittee, and it will discuss matters such as the state of higher education after 2040, the size policy by region, and by national, public, and private institutions. It is being considered.

In this way, educational policy is showing signs of questioning the very nature of universities. Looking back, the revision of the university establishment standards in April last year was unprecedentedly wide-ranging, and each university was forced to respond. What is currently happening in the situation surrounding higher education? How did this happen? What was the past like? By understanding these things correctly, perhaps we can see the future or find hints?

In this lecture, we would like to make this a place where we can decipher the situation surrounding higher education and changes in educational policy, and look ahead to tomorrow and create the future. We hope that this lecture will help those who have taken this lecture to play an active role in university reform after returning to their home universities.

Time management course useful for work

Under the guise of “for students” and “for teachers,” this training aims to create an opportunity to somehow break through the current situation surrounding the higher education industry, where there is a lot to do but there is always a shortage of staff. The purpose of this course is to help students learn through lectures and work how to use their time and how to proceed with their work.

You don’t have unlimited time. In addition, there are limits to the tasks that can be performed during one working day. Furthermore, in the work of educational corporations, the “achievement point” is often invisible, and there may be no end to it. Opportunity to review the fundamental way work is done from the perspective of how work can be carried out efficiently, whether the work is really necessary, and whether the standardized way of doing work (manual) is correct. I would like to. Let’s look back at your own behavioral patterns, analyze your characteristics, and find a sustainable way of working. You can expect even greater results by working together while exchanging opinions.

Use this as an opportunity to meet people working in the same industry and connect with them in the future!

Decrease in the working population and DEI (Diversity Equity and Inclusion)

According to the FY2020 Labor Force Survey, the labor force population (the combined population of employed and unemployed people aged 15 and over) has decreased by 50,000 people compared to the previous year. In today’s era where the declining birthrate and aging population are accelerating, securing workers is an issue that our organization must urgently address.

On the other hand, the diversity of the labor supply side, including the elderly and foreigners, is on the rise, and it can be said that we live in an era where the innovations created by this are remarkable.

Against this background, I think it is important for us university staff to have a broader perspective on new ways to utilize human resources, and to develop human resources that will lead to innovation.

A diversity perspective is essential for unprecedented university management. In this course, let’s learn the basic concept of DEI so that universities can further develop in 10 or 20 years.

Purpose and career design for university staff

The circumstances surrounding university staff work are undergoing major changes. From 2023 to 2065, the 18-year-old population will decrease from 1.09 million to 680,000. As the rate of university admission increases, the profile of students studying at your university will also change. In the future, there may be an increase in the number of employees who are active in jobs and work styles that are different from traditional ones. The social significance of the duties held by university staff will also continue to grow.

In addition, the careers of university staff have become more diverse, with some starting working at their alma mater as new graduates, others changing jobs from other industries such as private companies or civil servants, and others joining from other corporations. University employees are attracting increasing attention in the employment and career change markets.

On the other hand, there are actually quite a few employees who have such concerns.

“I wasn’t assigned to the department I wanted, so I can’t feel motivated towards my work.” “

I’m worried because I don’t feel like I’m growing due to all the routine work.” “

I changed jobs from a company, but I don’t feel like the university’s way of working.” `

`I have often thought about changing jobs, but I am not confident that I can succeed in another organization.”

Universities are currently in a period of transition. That’s probably why more and more people are feeling anxious and dissatisfied with their work. This training is designed for everyone who works within such a university organization.

・Understand objectively the special characteristics of the university as an organization, and learn the true nature of anxiety and dissatisfaction regarding work.

-Look back on your career and find out what is most important to you.

・Think about how to work in your own way within your current workplace.

The aim of this training is to reconsider the work and career of university staff through the content described above. We hope that the content will be useful not only for the participants’ own careers, but also for giving advice to colleagues, subordinates, juniors, and students aspiring to become university employees.

We are planning to hold various lectures and works, but we will make sure that you can easily participate in all of them. If you are interested in the career path of university staff, regardless of your age, position, department, etc., please feel free to apply.
